There are several things which might be causing the problem: you may have a defective cable to the disk drives (or dirty contacts on the disk controller card); you might be using an older drive with a terminator resistor pack in the first drive position (try setting it as drive 3 and the others as drives 1 and 2); or the terminator resistor pack may be missing from the final drive in the chain. My bet is the cable, as those tend to get crimped a bit while in storage. Hope this helps.
